Butterflies under the bridge. Creating an exhibition / Creando la exposición (English and Spanish)

Come and meet some of my dearest acquainteces from my Estonian period.  My first solo exhibition!

Through out my Estonian period I learned something I already suspected. I had a fascination for the human face. Having such unique features and being able to express the same emotions coming from different cultures and backgrounds had been for a long time a subject of my interest.

I could express my feeling about them, something as abstract as their way of being with masses of colours.

It is with this exhibition that I started painting in Estonia that I created my personal portrait painting style. After polishing my art statement and discourse I can say I am interested not only in what we see of the person but also what we know about them, what lies underneath the surface. But it didn't start like that. At all. In fact it started with a tantrum.

I did comment a few entries ago that I was scared of painting. I was quite good at drawing but I sucked at painting. Nevertheless, I had to take a painting course at uni and I had to create a project out of it. But I could only use paint. I had met through out the year very special people and I wanted to make something nice for them, something unexpected. So I decided to paint them and as I knew these people, I could not be satisfied with just any result. At this point of my life as an art student I was sick of "conventional" portraits, as I thought they did not represent someone's true self, or at least everyone's wild part was safely hidden and would not show. It wasn't fun at all.

I pulled out all the clubbing and party pictures I had with them as I thought they looked closer to their real selves in those. Working from their Facebook profile picture was going to be boring. So I started painting. And it was awful! I tried again and again for a few weeks and it was still horrible. So I went to the Painting department at Tartu Art College and almost cried of frustration at my failure. I think they were a bit shocked and unready for a Clara volcano so I believe that is why they allowed me to use a marker and mix both medias.

IT WORKED. It was amazing. I angrily drew my friends' faces with a thick marker on the failed paintings. I didn't even follow the painted areas and the result allowed me to elaborate a poetic about the inner and external feeling of a person. It did not even matter anymore how they looked. I could express my feeling about them, something as abstract as their way of being with masses of colours.
