Or why would this illustration be the most important page in my picture book.
As an experienced narrator either with words or with images, I find it very amusing when some of the characters' features are better left unsaid. If we would be a word narrator we would just either keep describing or write a situation where the dialogue or the motion would suggest those features. When being a - let's call it illustrator-narrator, or in other words, doing what an illustrator should do, we draw those extra information elements in the background.
For the purpose of this post I'm going to let you know one thing about my upcoming picture book ¡Corre, Tomás! *Spoiler alert *Tomás is a 6 year old cared by his daddy. His mum is a militar soldier and is deployed overseas. You will not know this until the very last page BUT there are hints about this EVERYWHERE through out the picture book.
And maybe the page where you can find the most is this one:
Look again. It is not about the father doing the dishes.
Let's start with what might be the most obvious, the calendar. Having so many days crossed out it would be rasonable to think they are keeping up to date. As I am Spanish, my mental week structure goes from Monday to Sunday. The calendar says it's Saturday and as it is circled it might be an important day. Also, Tomás is not in school.
The bucket on top of the washing machine. As we are assuming Saturday is an important date, it would be safe to guess that Dad has tried to tidy up the house for this special occasion. Therefore, he probably planned to do laundry but that never ended happening as he overslept (see previous blog posts).
Now let's turn our attention to the fridge.
First of all we get some extra information about Tomás. He likes drawing. He likes animals and planes and... what is that third drawing? A family. Children that age like to draw their own family, so that drawing reveals the existence of a second parent. Now let's go back to the airplane. Could that be a militar airplane? Is it because they wave mummy goodbye at the airport?
Once we know all that, we can look again at the illustration and take a look at the table:
There are three chairs and three table protectors. I also included three dirty dishes as an indication that they have enough dishes for three.
This is how I add all the extra information and hinting to the story; through a well thought out background.
O por qué ésta es quizá la ilustración más importante de mi álbum ilustrado.
Como narradora tanto de palabras como de imágenes, encuentro divertido dejar algunas características de los personajes sin explicar. Si estuviera en el papel de narradora mediante palabras escribiría una situación en la que un diálogo o la descripción de una actividad nos las sugiriera. Cuando estoy en el papel de ilustradora-narradora lo que hago es integrar esos elementos que nos aportan información extra en el fondo o escenario de la ilustración.
Para poder seguir comentando esta idea, tengo que hacer un spoiler sobre mi álbum ilustrado ¡Corre, Tomás! *Spoiler alert* Tomás es un niño de años cuidado por su padre. Su madre es una soldado militar destinada fuera del país. Esto no se sabe hasta la última página de la historia PERO hay pistas por todas partes en el libro.

Vamos a comenzar con lo que parece más obvio: el calendario. Viendo que hay tantos días tachados sería lógico pensar que van al día con el calendario. Al ser española, mi estructura mental de la semana va de lunes a domingo. El calendario revela que hoy es sábado y el hecho de que esté marcado con un círculo señala que es un día importante. Y Tomás no está en el colegio.
El barreño sobre la lavadora. Como estamos asumiendo que el sábado es un día importante no sería descabellado pensar que el padre ha intentado ordenar la casa tal ocasión especial. Probablemente tenía intención de poner una lavadora pero no acabó sucediendo ya que se durmió (ver entradas del blog previas).
Vamos a centrar nuestra atención ahora en la nevera.
Lo primero de todo es que conseguimos más información sobre Tomás. Le gusta dibujar. Le gusta dibujar animales, aviones y... ¿qué es ese tercer dibujo? Una familia. A los niños de esa edad le gusta dibujar a sus familias, así que ese dibujo revela la existencia de otra figura parental. Ahora volvamos al avión. ¿Podría ser un avión militar? ¿Eso es por que despiden a su mamá en el aeropuerto?
Ahora que sabemos todo esto, volvamos a echar un vistazo a la ilustración y miremos la mesa:
Hay tres sillas y tres salvamanteles. También decidí incluir tres platos sucios en la imagen como indicación de que tienen tres de todo.
Y así es como añado información extra y pistas a la historia, mediante un fondo planteado.
